The Hanover Park Police Department takes interest cards year round
and holds testing processes once or twice a year for police officers.
The testing process is as follows. An orientation session is held prior
to the start of the next testing process. The first step in testing
process is the physical agility test which consists of a one repetition
bench press, sit-ups, sit and reach, and a 1.5 mile run. The standards
used in the physical agility test are established by the
Illinois Law
Enforcement Training and Standard Board. The next step in the
process is the written test. This test is administered to applicants
upon their successful passing of the physical agility test the same day.
Applicants that pass these two steps are placed into an eligibility
pool. The Village of Hanover Park does not use a Police Commission and
as such no ranking of applicants occur. Applicants that have been placed
in the eligibility pool are then interviewed based upon the applicants
skills and needs of the department. Applicants that pass this step are
then placed on an initial eligibility list. When a vacancy or
anticipated vacancy occurs, applicants on the initial eligibility list
are then selected for an initial background screening. Applicants
information provided on the application is verified and the applicant is
contacted by background investigator for an Integrity Interview. The
integrity interview allows the background investigator to go over the
applicants application with them and also ask other in-depth background
questions of the applicant. The information gathered in this phase is
then forwarded to the department administration. Applicants that pass
this step are then placed on a final eligibility list.
Once a vacancy occurs, the applicant
is contacted and a conditional offer of employment, swearing in and
academy date is given to the applicant, pending the results of
psychological, polygraph and medical exams. If it is determined that
the new employee is fit for duty, he or she will then attend a 12-week
law enforcement training academy. If it is determined that the new
employee is not fit for duty, then the conditional offer of employment
is rescinded.
The Hanover Park Police Department utilizes the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy
located at the College of DuPage for academy training. For an
