Two New Life Saving
Procedures added for use by
Fire Department Paramedics

Hanover Park Fire Department paramedics were recently trained in two new procedures that will greatly enhance patient care in critical situations.

Adult Intraosseous Equipment

Adult Intraosseous Equipment

Adult Intraosseous (I.O)

Adult Intraosseous (I.O.) fluid resuscitation and drug therapy will now be an available option in patients presenting with cardiac arrest, shock, dehydration, traumatic injuries, and altered levels of consciousness.

Pediatric Intraosseous has been a standard practice for many years, however the adult procedure was not available due to bone hardness.

In critical patients this procedure allows medical personnel to rapidly infuse fluids and drugs directly into the tibia bone of the leg. This allows the fluids and drugs to be absorbed into the blood stream faster than the conventional procedure of starting an I.V. in the hand or arm.

During the 10 second procedure a stainless steel needle is drilled into the bone using a cordless drill. When lives are at risk the I.O. procedure will assist our personnel by offering increased speed and efficiency for vascular access.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a procedure used when a patient presents with difficulty breathing caused by pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, congestive heart failure, and acute pulmonary edema.

The simple procedure rapidly improves vital signs and gas exchange at the cellular level.

A mask is placed over the patients nose and mouth and oxygen is continually delivered under pressure.

CPAP is a quick non-evasive way to increase oxygen delivery to patients who critically need it. The use of CPAP can help reduce the number of patients who may otherwise need endotracheal intubation.
